To the left is a rendition of chains A and B of bovine heart cytochrome c oxidase. (2OCC in the protein data bank)
Cyan
marks the K-channel. These residues also mediate proton uptake.
The
orange residue in the center of the figure is Glu242. It is
responsible for shuttling protons to the catalytic center of the enzyme.
Green
residues mark the CuA site. This is the
electron acceptor of the enzyme.
The
blue molecule is Heme a3. The
yellow residues are the ligands of CuB. This
is the catalytic site of the enzyme. The CuB atom and the Fe atom of Heme a3
make up the so-called binuclear center.
